SACC CR Open Opens with High-Energy First Round

The 2025 SACC Costa Rica Open officially began today at Santa Ana Country Club, welcoming players across the globe for the first round of action. With the men’s and women’s $15,000 draws underway, fans gathered to witness opening-day action.

While the top seeds enjoyed a rest day, the remaining field — including local wildcards — battled for the right to move into Round 2. Among them were Costa Rica’s Bravo brothers, tournament regulars and crowd favourites. Former champion Josue Enriquez (GUA) opened his bid for another deep run with a decisive 3–0 victory over Gabriel Bravo, echoing his 2024 win against Gabriel’s brother, Mauricio.

This year, Mauricio Bravo faced a new challenger in Ecuador’s rising talent Álvaro Buenaño, and despite a strong start in taking the opening game, the Costa Rican No.1 fell 1–3 in 29 minutes (11–8, 2–11, 2–11, 5–11). Buenaño’s composure and accuracy proved too much as he powered into the next round.

The women’s draw delivered the day’s only five-game thriller, as Mary Fung-A-Fat (GUY) and Darlyn Sandoval (GUA) produced a tense, momentum-swinging contest. Fung-A-Fat claimed the first and third games, but Sandoval surged late, taking control of the fourth and closing the match in the fifth, winning 3–2 (11–3, 8–11, 11–5, 2–11, 6–11).

After a full day of squash, the Round of 16 is set — with today’s winners now preparing to take on the fresh top seeds in tomorrow’s highly anticipated matchups.
